Teaching & Preaching

I have extensive experience teaching and preaching in a variety of settings. My special passion is studying and communicating the truths of God's Word. Below is a summary of my experience in the order of local church assignments.

Grace Covenant Church, Springfield, Missouri (1972-1988)

    • I began by conducting a weekly discipleship class for new converts that ultimately included a curriculum that could be used at a distance.
    • While directing all aspects of Christian education I formed teaching/discipleship programs for the young, growing congregation.
    • I eventually designed churchwide curricula, including a basic "catechism" class, a membership class, and a spiritual gift discovery/spiritual formation class.
    • For the first 12 years I alternated with my father in providing a Sunday morning message. When I became the Senior Pastor I brought a message almost every weekend.
    • In this capacity I developed a variety of message series based around Bible themes intended to facilitate growth in the congregation.
City Bible Church, Portland, Oregon (1988-2006)

    • During these years I focused on teaching in the church-sponsored Bible College as often as three times a day.
    • As the Director of Adult Christian Education I designed a midweek teaching program and taught many classes myself, including:
      • About the Church
      • Spiritual Gifts
      • Healing
      • How to Get the Most from the Bible
      • What the Bible Teaches
      • Spirit-filled Living
      • Love Languages
    • I brought the Sunday morning message but only sporadically.
    • I was also able to teach and preach in a variety of local church in relationship with CBC and MFI.
    • I also had the opportunity to teach and preach on a variety of mission trips to Japan, Canada, Uganda and Malaysia.
New Community Church, LaGrange, Georgia (2009-2014)

    • As the Associate Pastor I brought the Sunday morning message fairly often.
    • With responsibility for Adult Member Ministries I designed a midweek teaching strategy and taught a number of classes, including:
      • Acts Two
      • Believe and Grow
      • Divide the Word
      • Eat the Word
      • God's Kingdom Community
      • Kingdom Parables
      • Spiritual Practices
      • The View
      • Made for Community
      • Overcoming Fear
